The event, which honors the legacy of lifeguard and waterman Eddie Aikau, went ahead despite challenging conditions, as it requires 40-foot waves by 8 a.m. on the day of the competition. Aikau, known for his heroic rescues in the dangerous waters of Oahu, was remembered as surfers competed in this iconic event.
