Hong Kong residents are set to embrace a variety of evolving travel trends in 2025, including multigenerational holidays, wellness retreats, and a focus on sustainability, according to a recent report by Booking.com.
The global travel platform’s survey, which gathered insights from over 28,000 participants across 33 countries, including 1,004 respondents from Hong Kong, revealed that multigenerational travel is one of the top trends for the upcoming year. Notably, Hong Kong families are particularly keen on traveling with three generations in tow—often with the older generation funding the trips.
“More than half of the respondents in Hong Kong are actively discussing or planning multigenerational holidays,” said Regina Chan, Booking.com’s area manager for Taiwan and Hong Kong. “It’s common to see families spanning three generations traveling together, a trend that’s deeply rooted in our culture.”
The survey found that 57% of Hongkongers are interested in multigenerational travel, a figure 11% higher than the global average of 46%. This trend is heavily influenced by the city’s close-knit family structure, where multiple generations often live together.
For these family vacations, Hong Kong travellers prioritize convenience, safety, and low language barriers, favoring nearby destinations such as Tokyo, Singapore, and the Gold Coast in Australia. However, emerging destinations like Urayasu (Japan), Ayodhya (India), and Bali (Indonesia) are also gaining popularity.
The report also highlighted that, for many Hong Kong families, the older generation typically bears the financial responsibility. A significant 86% of baby boomers in Hong Kong expressed a willingness to fund their children’s travel, and 62% would cover costs for their grandchildren. These trips often last between four to six days.
Another notable trend among Hong Kong travelers is the growing interest in “noctourism,” particularly dark-sky tourism. Many Hongkongers are keen on stargazing and enjoying cosmic events, with 10% more of them seeking dark-sky destinations compared to global travelers. This interest aligns with a broader appreciation for wellness and sustainability, both of which are key themes in the 2025 travel landscape.
In terms of sustainability, 66% of Hong Kong travelers indicated a desire to travel more responsibly, with 28% expressing guilt over not making eco-friendly choices. This eco-conscious mindset extends to their shopping habits, as 60% of respondents enjoy visiting second-hand stores while traveling, a figure that is 9% higher than the global average.
The survey also revealed that wellness is a major consideration for Hong Kong travelers, with 49% expressing an interest in longevity retreats. Additionally, 58% said they would be willing to pay for vacations designed to improve their overall health and well-being.
In summary, as Hong Kong looks ahead to 2025, the city’s travelers are embracing multigenerational travel, wellness-focused getaways, and more sustainable travel practices, signaling a shift toward more thoughtful and inclusive vacation experiences.
