What You Need to Know About Traveling to Greece and Europe in 2025: The ETIAS Requirement

by Alice

In mid-2025, a new border security measure will be implemented across Europe: the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This initiative is designed to streamline travel while ensuring enhanced safety and security within the Schengen Zone. Here’s everything you need to know about how ETIAS will impact your travel plans.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization (not a visa) that allows travelers from visa-exempt countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, to enter the Schengen Zone countries, including Greece, for short stays. Upon approval, the authorization is digitally linked to the traveler’s passport and remains valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Schengen Zone vs. EU: What’s the Difference?

Though often confused, the European Union (EU) and the Schengen Zone are not the same. The EU is a political and economic union of 27 member states that cooperate on various matters, including trade and policy. The Schengen Zone, however, is a travel area that allows passport-free movement between 27 countries, including several non-EU nations like Switzerland and Norway. While most EU countries are part of the Schengen Zone, there are exceptions, such as Ireland, and some countries like Cyprus are expected to join soon.

Who Needs ETIAS?

Travelers from more than 60 visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia, will be required to apply for ETIAS if they wish to enter the Schengen Zone for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period). However, citizens of Greece or Cyprus are exempt from ETIAS. Additionally, travelers with valid residence permits or residence cards from any Schengen Zone country will not need to apply.

The ETIAS Application Process

The ETIAS application process will be straightforward and conducted entirely online. Travelers will need to provide essential information, including passport details, and pay a fee of €7. Children under 18 and seniors over 70 are expected to be exempt from the fee but will still need to submit an ETIAS application.

This system is similar to the U.S. ESTA and the Canadian eTA, allowing travelers to complete the process quickly and easily.

Why Is ETIAS Being Introduced?

ETIAS aims to improve border security while making travel within the Schengen Zone more efficient. It will allow authorities to screen travelers before they arrive, ensuring a safer and smoother travel experience.

Start Planning for 2025

If you’re planning to visit Greece, other EU destinations, or non-EU Schengen countries like Switzerland and Norway in 2025 or beyond, it’s essential to prepare for the ETIAS application process. Make sure to stay updated with the latest guidelines and start your application in advance of your trip.
