A powerful Pacific storm is sweeping across North America’s Pacific Coast, delivering substantial snowfall and fierce winds, resulting in blizzard conditions that have disrupted travel and temporarily closed ski resorts from California to British Columbia.
California Resorts Brace for Impact
In California, The Palisades has reported a staggering 26 inches (65 cm) of fresh snow, with projections of an additional 10–15 inches (25–37 cm) at the base and up to 21 inches (52 cm) at higher elevations before the storm subsides. This would bring total snowfall from the storm to nearly four feet (1.2 meters). However, high winds have complicated operations.
Northstar, another popular Californian resort, echoed the intensity of the storm. “The flakes started flying Thursday, and they haven’t let up since,” the resort reported. Guests are urged to exercise caution, ski with a buddy, and monitor operational updates as heavy snowfall and winds persist.
Storm Extends North to Canada
Further north, the storm has delivered heavy snow to ski areas in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Whistler Blackcomb in BC recorded 25–35 cm of fresh snow on Saturday, adding to the 13 cm from Friday night. With another 10–15 cm overnight, the 36-hour snow total is expected to exceed 60 cm (2 feet).
Strong winds have significantly impacted operations at Whistler. “There will be delays opening the alpine on Sunday due to wind impact,” a spokesperson said, emphasizing that safety patrols are working to reopen terrain as soon as conditions allow.
Travel to Whistler has also been complicated by a landslide on Highway 99, causing significant road delays. The resort has advised travelers from the lower mainland to postpone their trips.
Disruption Amidst Opportunity
While the fresh snow is welcomed by skiers and snowboarders eager to hit the slopes, the storm’s intensity has created hazardous conditions. Resort closures, delayed openings, and travel disruptions are expected to continue until the storm passes and safety can be ensured.
This major weather event highlights both the excitement and challenges of winter recreation along North America’s Pacific Coast. For now, resorts remain focused on safety as they prepare to capitalize on the abundant snowfall in the days ahead.
