HK Express has launched a new international route connecting Hong Kong with Hualien, Taiwan, expanding travel options and fostering cultural and economic ties between the two regions. The low-cost carrier introduced this service on December 12, 2024, offering four weekly flights, with increased frequency during the Chinese New Year period.
“As Hong Kong’s only low-cost airline, our mission is to make travel accessible and affordable while connecting travelers to vibrant cities across Asia,” said Jeanette Mao, CEO of HK Express. “We are thrilled to inaugurate the Hong Kong-Hualien route, which currently stands as the only international scheduled service for Hualien Airport (HUN).”
Mao highlighted the airline’s commitment to providing flexibility for passengers, noting that HK Express operates 144 weekly flights between Hong Kong and neighboring Taiwanese cities, including Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. During the Chinese New Year season, the Hong Kong-Hualien route will temporarily increase to seven weekly flights to accommodate heightened demand.
“Hualien is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage,” Mao added. “This route allows travelers to explore Hualien’s unique landscapes, cuisine, and traditions conveniently. At the same time, it strengthens economic and cultural collaboration between Hong Kong and Taiwan, aligning with our ‘Gotta Go’ ethos.”
Gateway to Taiwan’s Treasures
The launch of this route not only enhances connectivity but also highlights Hualien’s appeal as a destination. Known for the majestic canyons of Taroko Gorge, Hualien is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Its vibrant night markets provide food lovers with authentic Taiwanese flavors, while its aboriginal culture adds depth to the visitor experience.
Other neighboring cities also offer diverse attractions. Taipei combines cosmopolitan energy with rich cultural sites, such as the Xinyi Shopping District and its eclectic dining scene. Kaohsiung boasts artistic charm, with landmarks like the Lotus Pond and the Pier-2 Art Center drawing visitors. Meanwhile, Taichung blends nature and artistry, with iconic spots such as the Gaomei Wetlands and the bustling Fengjia Night Market.
The new route reflects HK Express’s ongoing effort to expand its Asian network, providing more travel options while promoting tourism and cultural exchange. This expansion strengthens Hong Kong’s role as a regional travel hub, connecting passengers to the diverse wonders of Taiwan.
