Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia are emerging as top travel destinations for Australians, according to the latest data from the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA). The association’s monthly travel trends report reveals a 12.1% year-on-year rise in outbound Australian travelers, with 1.66 million Australians heading overseas in October 2024.

Japan saw the most significant growth, with Australian visitors increasing by a remarkable 73.8%, reaching 567,330. Vietnam followed with a 35.4% rise (423,630 visitors), while Indonesia grew by 26%, attracting 1.64 million Australian tourists.

Despite this growth, Indonesia remains the leading destination in terms of total outbound travelers, followed by New Zealand (up 8.2% to 1.34 million) and the United States (up 13% to 732,490). This surge in international travel has been bolstered by several airlines, including Turkish Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, resuming or launching services to Australia.

Richard Taylor, Director of Membership and Industry Affairs at ATIA, called the growth “unprecedented,” emphasizing that the surge in travel is driven by a strong desire for leisure, with Australians eager to reconnect with friends and family.
