A recent study conducted by the think tank Transport and Environment (T&E) has ranked Eurostar as the worst railway operator in Europe, based on an evaluation of 27 different rail companies across the continent. The study assessed various factors, including ticket prices, special fares, reliability, customer experience, compensation policies, and services for cyclists. Eurostar scored poorly across several categories, contributing to its position at the bottom of the overall ranking.

Key Findings:

Ticket Prices: Eurostar is among the most expensive operators in Europe, with higher fares compared to other services.

Reliability: Eurostar’s reliability received a dismal score of 4.6/10.

Cycling Policy: Eurostar scored 0/10 for its cycling policy, as bikes are not allowed on the train.

Traveler Experience: The overall passenger experience with Eurostar was found lacking, with criticisms regarding its lack of flexibility and service offerings.

While Eurostar disputes the results, claiming that improvements have been made since the data was collected, it is clear that the operator has much room for improvement, especially in areas like reliability and catering to cyclists.

Top Performers:

Trenitalia (Italy): Scored the highest with 7.7/10, earning praise for its overall service quality.

SBB (Switzerland), RegioJet (Czech Republic), ÖBB (Austria), and SNCF (France) rounded out the top five.

Criticism of the Rail Sector:

T&E’s report also criticized the European rail sector as a whole, stating that while improvements are possible, overall services are not satisfactory. The think tank emphasized that policy change is urgently needed, with greater support for the rail industry to meet climate goals and improve passenger services. Rail systems are considered key to achieving zero-emission mobility, and operators must invest in upgrading services to maximize their climate potential.

Specific Service Strengths:

Best Ticket Prices: Flixtrain, Ouigo, and RegioJet offered the most affordable fares.

Best Reliability: SBB, SNCB (Belgium), and Renfe (Spain) scored highest for reliability.

Best Travel Experience: SNCF, Trenitalia, and DB (Germany) were rated the most comfortable.

In contrast, SNCB (Belgium) ranked the lowest in terms of comfort and travel experience.

Conclusion:

The study underscores the need for European railway operators to step up their service standards, not only to provide better travel experiences but also to help achieve environmental sustainability goals. Eurostar, with its poor scores, faces significant pressure to improve, particularly in terms of reliability and inclusivity for cyclists.
