London Heathrow Reigns as Europe’s Busiest Airport in 2024, Outpacing Paris and Amsterdam

by Alice

Air travel in Europe has fully rebounded from the pandemic, with nearly one billion passengers flying within the European Union in 2023 alone. Among the continent’s busiest airports, London Heathrow claimed the top spot, surpassing other major hubs like Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol.

Record-Breaking Passenger Traffic

London Heathrow welcomed a staggering 79 million passengers in 2023, making it the busiest airport in Europe. Paris Charles de Gaulle followed closely with 67 million passengers, while Amsterdam Schiphol ranked third with 62 million. Madrid’s Barajas airport completed the top four with 60 million passengers.

This surge in passenger numbers underscores the continued recovery of Europe’s aviation sector, which saw a 19% average increase in air travel across all EU member states compared to 2022. Notably, Malta, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic experienced the most significant growth in passenger numbers, with increases of 33.3%, 30.9%, and 29.4%, respectively.

Growing International Travel

The trend in air travel has shifted, with Europeans now traveling more frequently to destinations outside the EU than within the bloc. According to the latest Eurostat report, 49% of passengers flew to countries beyond the EU in 2023, while 36% traveled within the union, and only 15% of flights were domestic.

When it comes to intercontinental flights, North America remained the top destination for EU travelers, accounting for 11.1% of all international flights, followed by West Asia (9.4%), North Africa (8.8%), and South America (3.1%).

The Bigger Picture

The total number of passengers flying in and out of the EU in 2023 reached 973 million, demonstrating the aviation sector’s robust recovery. The continued growth in passenger traffic is also reflected in the rising number of flights to and from non-EU countries, particularly in regions like North Macedonia and Serbia, which reported even higher increases in air travel, at 47% and 38%, respectively.

As Europe’s aviation landscape continues to thrive, London Heathrow’s status as the busiest airport solidifies its role as a crucial global travel hub, drawing millions of international passengers each year.
