The aviation industry, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, is showing remarkable recovery. According to the latest Skift Travel Health Index, October 2024 saw the global aviation sector grow by 19% year-over-year, with the Asia Pacific region outpacing the rest of the world, posting an impressive 33% increase.
This surge in aviation activity reflects the resurgent demand for both domestic and international flights across the region. Key metrics such as flight searches and bookings reveal Asia Pacific’s dominance, with all indicators showing growth surpassing 30%.
One notable trend highlighted by the index is the increasing demand for airport lounges in the Asia Pacific region. Domestic lounge visits had already surpassed pre-pandemic levels by mid-2022, and international lounge traffic rebounded strongly in 2024. As of October, international lounge visits have grown by 37% compared to 2019.
The rise in lounge visits points to a broader shift in consumer preferences, with travelers seeking more premium services. A survey by Collinson revealed that 44% of Asia Pacific travelers consider lounge access to be the most valuable benefit of travel-related credit cards, even more so than perks like fast-track security or airport transfers. Furthermore, 90% of respondents stated that lounge access is an essential feature of any fee-based credit card.
This growing appetite for comfort and exclusivity is driving the expansion of premium travel experiences. Airport lounges in the region are responding with enhanced amenities, such as high-speed Wi-Fi, gourmet dining, and luxury spa treatments, catering to the increasing demand for convenience and luxury in the travel experience.
Countries tracked in the Asia Pacific region include Australia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, India, and Singapore.
The latest data underscores Asia Pacific’s central role in the global aviation recovery, highlighting the region’s growing influence on the future of air travel.
