Over six months, my husband and I had the opportunity to explore 13 major European cities. Embracing a “slow travel” approach, we immersed ourselves in each location, taking time to appreciate its unique culture and history. While I was captivated by some cities, there are others that I might not return to. Here are the two European cities I can’t wait to revisit and two that, though memorable, may not make it onto my future travel list.
Edinburgh: A City to Return To
Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, left a lasting impression on me with its medieval charm and striking architecture. The city’s skyline is dominated by the majestic Edinburgh Castle, which offers panoramic views and a deep connection to the city’s past. From its historic sites like Mary King’s Close, a preserved 17th-century alley, to the fascinating whiskey tours highlighting Scotch’s regional varieties, Edinburgh is a place brimming with history and culture.
One of the city’s best surprises was its abundance of hot chocolate shops, perfect for warming up on a cold day. Pairing a rich cocoa with a fresh doughnut from one of Edinburgh’s many bakeries became one of my favorite afternoon rituals. Given its rich history, enchanting streets, and cozy ambiance, Edinburgh is a destination I look forward to exploring again.
Amsterdam: A City Worth Revisiting
While Amsterdam is often associated with its vibrant nightlife and the Red Light District, there’s much more to the Dutch capital. I ventured beyond the well-known tourist spots to explore the quieter, local neighborhoods. Walking along the canals, I discovered the lively Foodhallen market, where I savored Dutch delicacies like bitterballen—deep-fried stew balls—and enjoyed international treats like sushi and corndogs.
Amsterdam’s bike-friendly layout and scenic canals offer a distinct way to experience the city, and its world-class museums, such as the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, are must-visits. These sites provide moving insights into the city’s rich artistic and historical heritage. With its laid-back vibe and unique atmosphere, I’m excited to return and uncover even more of Amsterdam’s hidden gems.
Zurich: Beautiful, But Not a Repeat Destination
Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city, is undeniably beautiful, especially when viewed from the banks of Lake Zurich. While I enjoyed its scenic views and had a memorable experience tasting currywurst by the lake, I can’t see myself returning to the city on my next trip to Switzerland. The primary reason for this is Zurich’s proximity to some of the most picturesque villages in the Swiss Alps. Towns like Wengen and Mürren, with their storybook landscapes and quaint charm, offer a more peaceful and scenic escape.
Although Zurich offers a blend of culture and beauty, the city’s high prices and its bustling urban environment made me realize I would prefer to explore the quieter, more natural areas of Switzerland on my next visit.
Cardiff: A One-Time Visit
Cardiff, the capital of Wales, initially piqued my interest with its famous Cardiff Castle. The historic site, with its 2,000 years of history, didn’t disappoint, offering fascinating insights into ancient ruling families and wartime secrets. However, after touring the castle and exploring the city, I felt that Cardiff didn’t quite live up to its reputation as a top-tier European destination.
While the Victorian and Edwardian arcades were charming and unique, the city center felt a bit underwhelming compared to other European cities. A noticeable amount of litter and a lack of diverse attractions made me realize that while Cardiff is worth a visit for history lovers, there are other, more compelling destinations in Wales I’d like to explore in the future, especially given the country’s abundance of beautiful, lesser-known castles.
After visiting 13 cities across Europe, I’ve learned that each destination has its own charm, but some resonate more than others. While Edinburgh and Amsterdam are cities I’ll gladly return to, Zurich and Cardiff, despite their beauty and history, may not be on my itinerary next time. There’s always more to discover, and Europe’s diversity ensures that every trip is a unique adventure.
