Starting January 8, 2025, US citizens, along with travelers from Canada, Australia, and several other countries, will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the UK, even for layovers. The UK government officially launched the ETA application portal for non-European travelers in November 2024, after several delays. The application can be submitted via the UK ETA mobile app or website.
Key Details About the UK ETA:
What is an ETA?
The ETA is not a visa, but rather a digital authorization granting permission to enter the UK. It’s similar to the US ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). The ETA is required for both short visits and longer stays (up to six months). It’s linked to your passport, and while it allows multiple entries, it expires after two years or when your passport expires (whichever comes first).
Cost: The ETA costs £10 (approximately $13 USD).
Duration of Stay: The ETA allows travelers to stay in the UK for up to six months at a time.
Transit Passengers: Travelers passing through the UK on layovers will also need an ETA, even if they don’t leave the airport. This rule is in place to prevent people from bypassing the ETA system by taking connecting flights through the UK. However, this rule is still “under review” and may change in the future.
Application Timeline: Most ETA applications are approved the same day, but travelers are advised to apply at least 72 hours before their departure, in case of delays.
Eligibility: Starting January 8, 2025, US, Canadian, and Australian citizens will be required to apply for an ETA. Citizens from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are already required to obtain ETAs. In April 2025, citizens from European countries will also need to apply for the ETA as the rules become fully effective.
Required Documents:
To apply, you’ll need:
- A valid passport
- A recent digital headshot (meeting UK passport photo requirements)
- A valid email address
- Details about your travel plans (dates, destination, etc.)
- A debit or credit card to pay the fee
What Else to Know:
The UK ETA is part of a broader move to digitize UK border controls, with all visitors (except UK or Irish citizens) requiring advanced approval to enter the UK by the end of 2025. It is essential to apply for your ETA before travel to avoid fines or being denied boarding. The ETA will allow easier access for travelers from many countries, as well as streamline border checks.
If you’re planning travel to the UK in 2025, make sure to apply for your ETA well in advance to ensure smooth entry into the country.
