CAPA selects award winners across various categories through a rigorous analysis of data from independent sources, aligning with the insights of the CAPA-Envest Global Environmental Sustainability Benchmark Report. This report emphasizes transparency and data-driven assessments to identify leaders in sustainability.
Güliz Öztürk, CEO of Pegasus Airlines, expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, “We are very honored to receive this special award from CAPA, which reflects our hard work at all levels of environment, sustainability, and governance (ESG). To achieve the industry’s 2050 net-zero emissions goals, we are making strategic investments in next-generation aircraft, expanding the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and adopting innovative technologies—each of which is a vital component of our climate transition roadmap. I would like to thank all our colleagues at Pegasus Airlines for their unwavering commitment to a more sustainable future.”
In his acceptance speech, Ali Uzun remarked, “We are pleased to have made further progress globally and to receive this recognition again, following last year’s EMEA award. I am confident that every airline will continue to push boundaries to create a more efficient and sustainable future for the international aviation industry, both economically and environmentally. We are excited to lead this challenge as we work toward our mid- to long-term emissions targets. I am proud to be part of such a successful organization as Pegasus Airlines.”
Simon Ayersgood, Head of the Center for Aviation Research at CAPA, noted, “CAPA is pleased to recognize Pegasus Airlines as the 2024 Global Environmentally Sustainable Airline of the Year, thanks to its industry-leading emissions performance, outstanding operational efficiency, and strategic approach to advancing sustainability across all areas. Pegasus stands out globally, demonstrating how integrating sustainability initiatives into corporate culture can significantly enhance an airline’s performance and efficiency.”
Founded in Istanbul, Pegasus Airlines is a prominent low-cost carrier that has experienced remarkable growth since transitioning to scheduled flight services in 2005, establishing itself as a leader in the regional aviation sector. Over the past decade, the airline has more than doubled its passenger numbers and tripled its route network, now covering 53 destinations in 143 countries.
In alignment with its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals and climate transition roadmap, Pegasus is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint. The airline aims to cut carbon emissions per revenue passenger kilometer (RPK) by 20% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Key elements of its sustainability strategy include modernizing the fleet, enhancing fuel efficiency, expanding the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and improving operational efficiency, including the increased use of electric ground support vehicles at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
Through its fleet renewal efforts, Pegasus has established one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets globally, comprising 112 aircraft, with 92% being A320neo and A321neo models.
