With a significant influx of visitors expected, traffic congestion in and around Manchester, particularly on Salford’s inner ring road, may increase vehicle journey times by up to 20% during peak hours, especially between 4 PM and 7 PM.
TfGM is encouraging both residents and visitors to utilize public transport to help alleviate congestion and avoid delays. The city features a comprehensive Metrolink network and 36-hour bus services, including the V24 and Route 1, which connect Manchester with Leigh and Bolton. These options provide a reliable means of accessing festive events without the stress of finding parking.
Motorists should be aware that the M67 highway in Tameside will experience significant closures from 9 PM on Friday until 5 AM on Monday due to essential bridge works affecting the section between Junction 1A and Junction 3. TfGM advises drivers to follow official diversion routes and not rely solely on GPS navigation, as traffic is expected to increase along these detours. Residents in areas such as Denton, Hyde, and Staley Bridge are encouraged to consider alternative routes, use public transport, or adjust their travel times accordingly.
In addition to the Christmas market, Manchester will host a Day of Remembrance ceremony in St Peter’s Square, which will result in tram service disruptions and road closures from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. Additionally, Manchester United will face Leicester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, and the MTV EMA Awards Ceremony will take place at Co-op Live in the evening, both events expected to draw large crowds.
Danny Vaughan, Chief Network Officer at TfGM, emphasized the advantages of the Bee Network, encouraging travelers to forgo driving in favor of public transport for a smoother and more economical journey. “Choosing public transport is a smart way to save time and money during the festive season,” Vaughan stated. “With frequent bus and tram services, affordable family tickets, and options for short walks or biking, people can avoid traffic jams and enjoy a stress-free journey.”
