As Birmingham’s renowned Christmas market opens its doors for another festive season, the region’s railways are primed to ensure passengers can travel to and from the celebrations safely and efficiently.
Birmingham New Street Station, along with Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham Snow Hill, plays a critical role in facilitating access to the Christmas markets, as well as the city’s bars, shops, and restaurants.
The Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham is the city’s most popular annual event, drawing millions of visitors each year. In 2023, during the weekend leading up to Christmas, Birmingham New Street Station is expected to see passenger numbers exceed 500,000.
In anticipation of the market’s opening, staff at Birmingham New Street have been collaborating with Birmingham City Council, the UK Transport Police, and train operators for months to ensure a well-coordinated response to the influx of visitors. Plans are in place to manage large crowds and maintain passenger safety.
Following a successful trial last year, a dedicated anti-social behaviour team will be stationed at Birmingham New Street, supported by the UK Transport Police and St John Ambulance volunteers, to enhance safety measures.
This week, Majid Mahmood, Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet member for Environment and Transport, and Deputy Leader Sharon Thompson visited the station to observe preparations for the Christmas market.
“It’s encouraging to see the proactive measures Rail Network is implementing to ensure passenger safety during such popular events,” said Mahmood. “We have always collaborated closely with our partners to address anti-social behaviour and crime on public transport and throughout the city, and we look forward to continuing this work.”
Patrick Bauer, Head of Station and Passenger Experience for the Central Line at Rail Network, expressed gratitude for the support from Birmingham City Council. “Having the Anti-Social Behaviour team during this busy season means that everyone can enjoy the festive spirit while traveling safely,” he noted. He urged passengers to follow three key guidelines to ensure a smooth journey.
Lucy Wooton, Head of the Grand Rail Partnership, highlighted the importance of rail services during this festive time. “It’s the most wonderful time of year for the city, and rail plays a vital role in ensuring everyone can enjoy the festivities,” she said. “With Network Rail preparing for additional passengers and train operators enhancing services, we are ready to help everyone travel smoothly and safely. Planning ahead, allowing extra time, and being patient and kind to fellow passengers and staff will go a long way.”
While the Christmas markets and attractions bring vibrancy to the city, they also mean that trains and platforms will be busier than usual. As in previous years, queuing systems may be implemented during peak times to ensure safety as passengers return home.
