Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) has officially announced the release of a tender inviting retailers to provide essential travel products, marking a significant step in the airport’s development as it prepares for its grand opening. The new airport, set to operate 24 hours a day, aims to become Sydney’s primary gateway for international, domestic, and air cargo services by late 2026.
WSI is designed to handle an impressive initial capacity of up to 10 million passengers annually. As the airport evolves, it is projected to become the largest in Sydney, with an expected annual passenger volume surpassing 80 million, comparable to the current operations at London Heathrow Airport.
Simon Hickey, the CEO of WSI, emphasized the importance of this tender as part of the airport’s commitment to providing an exceptional shopping experience. “Today’s release of our second retail tender brings us closer to delivering a top-tier shopping experience for our future passengers, visitors, and staff,” Hickey stated. “Having already sought a duty-free retail partner, we are now eager to collaborate with a Travel Essentials retailer, which plays a vital role in meeting the needs of travelers seeking last-minute purchases.”
The construction progress at WSI is notable, with over 85% of the work completed. Hickey noted, “While we are approaching the critical phase of the project build, there remains substantial work ahead to finalize WSI’s commercial offerings before we open our doors in late 2026.”
In addition to the tender for Travel Essentials, WSI has initiated Registration for Interest calls for other essential services, including car park management and out-of-home advertising.
Glyn Williams, General Manager for Retail at WSI, shared the airport’s vision for creating a premier shopping and dining environment. “This latest tender represents a fantastic opportunity for a Travel Essentials retailer to join a spectacular new shopping destination in one of the nation’s most vibrant and rapidly growing regions,” Williams remarked.
WSI is set to feature approximately 7,000 square meters of leasable retail space, including over 40 retail stores. The Travel Essentials section will comprise around 560 square meters, strategically located within the terminal and encompassing arrivals and check-in areas. This layout is designed to ensure travelers have easy access to essential products as they navigate through the airport.
The airport’s commercial strategy also includes plans for additional concession tenders, with offerings such as foreign exchange, general retail, food and beverage, and vending services set to be launched within the next 12 months.
As the region of Western Sydney continues to expand, WSI aims not only to serve as a transit point but also to enhance the overall travel experience through a diverse array of retail and service options. The airport’s commitment to collaboration with top-tier retailers underscores its goal of becoming a leading destination for both travelers and the local community.
For potential retailers, this tender process represents a unique opportunity to establish a presence in a rapidly growing market that promises significant foot traffic and a diverse customer base. The airport’s strategic focus on convenience and quality service is poised to set a new standard in airport retail experiences.
As WSI progresses towards its opening date, the anticipation builds for what promises to be a transformative addition to Sydney’s transport infrastructure. The development of Western Sydney International Airport signifies not only an advancement in air travel accessibility but also a commitment to fostering economic growth in one of Australia’s most dynamic regions.
With plans to accommodate a wide range of travelers, WSI is set to become a crucial player in connecting Sydney to the world while offering an exceptional retail experience that meets the evolving needs of modern passengers.
