The state recently hosted a three-day bird festival from October 18 to 20 in the Binov area of the Mussoorie Sanctuary, which drew bird lovers from all corners of the country to celebrate the region’s vibrant birdlife.
Globally, countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands have well-developed birdwatching tourism industries, while the U.S. market is valued at approximately $8 billion annually. As India’s birdwatching community grows rapidly, projected to increase from 45,000 enthusiasts to nearly 20 million by 2025, Uttarakhand is positioning itself to be a leader in this sector.
Uttarakhand is home to 268 of the 762 bird species found across India, making it one of the richest regions for bird diversity, second only to Maharashtra. The Forest Department plans to leverage this biodiversity by developing new sites across the state, making birdwatching a central attraction.
The Forest Department is promoting ethical birdwatching practices, keeping sustainability in mind, and discouraging behaviors that could harm these habitats, such as disturbing nests, feeding birds unnatural food, or playing loud sounds. Volunteers and birding advocates nationwide are encouraged to join in promoting these responsible practices.
