In a move to facilitate travel during the Deepavali festivities, the Works Ministry has announced that private vehicle users will enjoy toll-free travel on highways on October 29 and 30.
Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed that the initiative will begin at 12:01 AM on Tuesday, October 29, and conclude at 11:59 PM the following day, Wednesday, October 30. This measure is designed to enable members of the Indian Hindu community and other travelers to celebrate Deepavali in a spirit of joy and unity.
“The Madani government has approved this toll exemption to allow for smoother travel during the holiday,” he stated. It is important to note that this toll waiver applies exclusively to Class 1 vehicles—private cars—and will be effective across all highways. However, it will not include tolls at border crossings, specifically the Sultan Iskandar Building (North South Highway) and Tanjung Kupang (Malaysia-Singapore Second Line Expressway) toll plazas in Johor.
The initiative is estimated to cost the government approximately RM38 million.
Minister Alexander also encouraged road users to adhere to travel schedules and advisories issued by highway concessionaires. “Please ensure your vehicle is in good condition and that your e-wallet and Touch ‘n Go card have sufficient balance,” he advised.
He further urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, obey traffic regulations, and take breaks if feeling fatigued. “Let us work together to keep our highways safe, clean, and comfortable while also reducing road accident statistics in Malaysia,” he added.
For real-time updates on highway conditions, road users can access the Malaysian Highway Authority’s CCTV display at www.llm.gov.my. Additionally, the Highway Traffic Management Centre can be reached at 1-800-88-7752 for the latest traffic information or assistance during their journey. Travelers can also follow the official social media accounts of the Malaysian Highway Authority for updates on traffic status and incidents.
