Recent research by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) indicates that global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the travel and tourism sector dropped by 12% last year compared to the peak in 2019. In contrast, the economic value of the sector remained only 4% below its pre-pandemic level.

Virginia Messina, Senior Vice President at WTTC, delivered this key message during her address at the ‘A World for Travel’ event in Seville, Spain. “Our sector is experiencing unprecedented growth,” Messina stated. She highlighted that while GHG emissions from travel and tourism have decreased to 6.7%, the need to focus on reducing absolute emissions remains critical. “Although there are improvements in renewable energy usage and a reduced reliance on fossil fuels, we still have a long way to go,” she emphasized.

Calls for Urgent Collaboration

Christian Delom, Secretary General of the Alliance for World Tourism (AWFT), expressed urgency regarding the sustainability of the travel industry. “Travel is not acting fast enough. We have already reached a global temperature increase of 1.5 degrees, making the transition to sustainability even more challenging,” he said. Delom stressed the necessity for increased collaboration and alliances to address these pressing issues. The annual AWFT initiative aims to empower the industry to navigate these challenges effectively.

Radisson’s Commitment to Net Zero

The Radisson Hotel Group has committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, focusing on sustainable travel and enhancing guest experiences. Inge Huijbrechts, Chief Sustainability & Security Officer, reported that the Radisson Collection Hotel, Magdalena Plaza Sevilla, is LEED GOLD certified and operates entirely on renewable energy, achieving a 30% reduction in water consumption compared to similar hotels. “As a responsible business pioneer, Radisson believes we must move beyond reasoning; the impact of environmental disasters is evident,” Huijbrechts stated.

Bridging the Sustainability Gap in Travel Choices

Jane McFadzean, Senior Director of Global Sustainability and ESG at Trip.com Group, highlighted the challenge of bridging the gap between travelers’ intentions and actions regarding sustainability. “While 92% of travelers express interest in sustainable options, only 56.9% follow through,” she noted. McFadzean called for clearer, uniform labeling of sustainable travel options, recognizing the regional differences that necessitate greater public education.

Managing Risks in the Travel Industry

Alastair Crossley, Global Head of Travel for AXA Partners, discussed the role of insurance in managing sustainability-related risks in the travel sector. He presented findings from a recent survey of 25,000 respondents, revealing that 66% feel vulnerable to cyber-attacks, with climate change identified as the top risk. Crossley observed a significant decline in public confidence regarding governmental efforts to address these issues, dropping from 22% to 5% year-over-year. “Seventy percent believe the insurance industry is well positioned to mitigate these risks, and we are working collectively towards that goal,” he concluded.

Sustainability Challenges in Car Rentals

Jehan de Thé, Group Public Affairs Director at Europcar Mobility, emphasized the complexities of sustainability within the car rental industry. He acknowledged that customer demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is limited, largely due to concerns over charging infrastructure and language barriers. De Thé advocated for better communication and education to engage younger audiences in sustainable practices. “Our role is to provide the right information at the right time and in the right way. Travelers are not interested in scientific details; they want visuals and insights on the impact of their choices,” he remarked.

As the travel industry continues to evolve, the need for collaborative efforts and clear communication in sustainability initiatives remains crucial for achieving meaningful progress.
