Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia team up to introduce the stunning Alps-Adriatic region, offering immersive slow travel, breathtaking landscapes, and world-class cuisine.
With American interest in European travel still on the rise and increasing concerns about over-tourism making headlines, many savvy U.S. travelers are seeking out lesser-known destinations that offer deeper, more immersive experiences in Europe.
In response, Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia are coming together to introduce a captivating new region that blends the breathtaking Alpine landscapes of southern Austria with Slovenia’s vibrant towns, rich forests, and contemporary cuisine, along with the striking inland and coastal beauty of Croatia’s Adriatic gems.
For the first time, the three countries are collaborating with Condé Nast Traveler to promote this region as ideal for slow travel. This joint initiative highlights the region’s shifting natural landscapes, stunning outdoor experiences, and a strong culinary culture rooted in farm-to-table traditions. It aims to offer a travel experience that fosters a deep connection with the land and its culture.
Adventurers will find countless ways to explore the region’s natural beauty—whether cycling through Austria’s southern lake district, which boasts over 200 lakes, or discovering the unique outdoor activities in Slovenia, such as exploring the fascinating underground world of Postojna Cave and Mount Peca. Croatia’s Kvarner and Zadar regions also provide exceptional sailing opportunities along its sparkling coastline.
The region’s culinary traditions are a key highlight, where farm-to-table dining is not just a trend, but a way of life passed down through generations. From bustling local markets and designated slow-food villages to a range of dining experiences, including Michelin-starred restaurants, this destination offers something for every discerning palate.
To fully appreciate the diverse offerings of this region, travelers are encouraged to spend at least twelve days exploring. A joint presence of Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia is set to debut at the Signature Travel Network Conference in Las Vegas this November, where the Alps-Adriatic region will be introduced to hundreds of U.S.-based travel advisors.
This collaboration is part of a larger initiative by the European Travel Commission, co-funded by the European Union, to attract curious and mindful travelers to Europe’s hidden treasures.
