Frontier Airlines has emerged as the leading low-cost carrier in the United States for involuntarily bumping passengers, far exceeding the rates of its competitors.
Involuntary Bumping Rates
From early 2023 to 2024, Frontier Airlines bumped 3.21 passengers per 10,000 travelers, according to a study by Upgraded Points. This figure represents a staggering 400 percent increase compared to any other U.S. airline. In contrast, American Airlines followed with a bump rate of 0.60 per 10,000 passengers, and Spirit Airlines reported 0.43 per 10,000.
Industry Practices and Passenger Frustration
“Few travel experiences are more frustrating than being bumped from a flight after purchasing a ticket,” stated Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief at Upgraded Points. “Airlines routinely sell more tickets than available seats in anticipation of no-shows.” The study aimed to inform travelers about which airlines are most likely to experience this issue.
Low Bump Rates from Delta and Allegiant
On the other end of the spectrum, both Delta Air Lines and Allegiant Air reported zero involuntary bumps. However, Delta led in voluntary bumps, with a rate of 7.49 per 10,000 passengers, highlighting its willingness to offer compensation for passengers who opt to give up their seats.
Compensation for Bumped Passengers
Airlines typically provide compensation to volunteers when overbooking occurs, offering incentives such as cash, upgraded seating on later flights, or lounge access. The Upgraded Points study also revealed that the compensation amount travelers are willing to accept varies significantly by state. For instance, in Arkansas, passengers will agree to be bumped for an average minimum of $382, while in California, the figure rises to an average of $832.
Factors Influencing Bumping Decisions
Layover wait times and seasonal factors, such as holiday travel, also play a critical role in whether travelers are willing to relinquish their seats.
Conclusion
With Frontier Airlines at the forefront of involuntary bumps, travelers are encouraged to remain informed about airline practices and compensation policies, particularly as rates and willingness to accept bumps vary across different states and circumstances.
