Several hiking trails at Glacier National Park have been closed due to a recent bear encounter involving a group of hikers.
Incident Overview
According to a release from the National Park Service, a 35-year-old male hiker was bitten below the knee by a bear that was startled by the group as they were traversing Grinnell Overlook. In an attempt to deter the bear, the hiking party used bear spray, which successfully moved the animal away from them.
Conditions Contributing to the Encounter
Park officials indicated that foggy weather likely contributed to low visibility, making it difficult for the hikers to see the bear in advance. Fortunately, the hiking group was equipped with essential safety and emergency gear, including a first aid kit and communication devices.
Trail Closures for Safety
In response to the incident, park rangers have temporarily closed several hiking trails to ensure visitor safety while they assess the bear’s movements and determine the safety of the trails. Currently, the following areas are closed: Garden Wall, Grinnell Glacier Overlook, Highline Hill, Highline Trail, and Sperry Glacier, including Sperry Chalet.
Areas Under Surveillance
Additionally, the park has issued warnings for 16 locations where bear activity has been noted, including Boulder Lake, Cracker Lake, Granite Park, and Siyeh Pass.

Awareness of Bear Activity
“Visitors are reminded that the fall season is when bears are more likely to be active due to hyperphagia,” the National Park Service stated in their release. “As bears prepare for their long winter hibernation, they need to consume as much food as possible to sustain them through months without nourishment.” The National Park Service regularly advises hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to remain vigilant while enjoying the park’s natural beauty.
