A cost-savings initiative may soon impact train service in the Greater Montreal area. According to a document issued by the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM), the commuter train network was evaluated in June 2024.
Potential Line Closures
A report from Radio-Canada indicates that the possibility of shutting down several train lines was discussed at a recent board meeting. The report, dated August 29, 2024, projects that fully closing the lines could yield annual savings of up to $21 million.
Impact of Buses on Traffic
The ARTM also considered replacing these train lines with bus services. However, as Montreal is the second most congested city in Canada, concerns arise about the implications for the city’s already strained traffic situation.
At-Risk Train Lines
Which Montreal train lines are facing potential closure? The three least busy lines—Mascouche, Candiac, and Mont-Saint-Hilaire—are currently at risk. Furthermore, the ARTM is contemplating discontinuing service to certain stations on the Vaudreuil-Hudson and Saint-Jérôme lines.
Passenger Redirection Plans
Passengers of the Candiac line would be redirected by bus to Brossard, while those on the Mascouche line would be directed to the Radisson Metro station.
Conclusion
As discussions about these changes continue, commuters in the Greater Montreal area may soon need to adapt to a new transportation landscape, potentially saying goodbye to their regular train services.
