On Sunday, wine enthusiasts around the globe will come together to celebrate Global Wine Tourism Day, an annual tribute to the rich heritage and diversity of Greek wines.
Observed on the second Sunday of November since 2009, Global Wine Tourism Day began as a European celebration and expanded to international recognition in 2019. Greek wineries across the nation will mark the occasion with guided tours, tastings of both fresh and aged wines, and a sampling of local culinary specialties.
This event highlights Greece’s longstanding winemaking tradition, which includes over 1,750 wineries. Of these, approximately 100 are equipped to welcome tourists with specialized visitor facilities.
Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni underscored the government’s commitment to promoting wine tourism by establishing a national network of visitor-ready wineries. This initiative aims to attract off-season tourists by integrating wine production with hospitality and culinary experiences.
“We want travelers to forge meaningful connections with our regions through unique wine experiences,” Kefalogianni said, emphasizing the importance of global marketing efforts to position Greece’s wine regions as prime destinations.
This initiative represents a strategic move to elevate Greece’s tourism offerings by blending cultural heritage, history, and regional flavors into a comprehensive, immersive experience.
