Starting today, Chicagoans using public transportation may notice a vibrant new addition to the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) “L” tracks. The initiative, titled “Track(ed) Changes,” introduces a series of trains adorned with colorful artworks created by a diverse group of local artists. This project aims to infuse the city’s transit system with art while enhancing the cultural atmosphere as Chicago hosts the Democratic National Convention.
Project Overview and Objectives
The “Track(ed) Changes” project is designed to coincide with the Democratic National Convention being held in Chicago. The initiative seeks to boost the convention’s positive economic impact by promoting local art and spreading cultural wealth throughout the city. For up to a year, trains will feature designs by prominent artists such as Nick Cave, Esperanza Rosas, and Noel Mercado, among others.
“This initiative is all democracy-related and fabulous,” said Bob Faust, the project’s curator, in an interview with the New York Times. Faust highlighted that the artists were advised to focus on artistic expression rather than overtly political or electioneering themes.
Complementary Cultural Efforts
“Track(ed) Changes” is part of a larger cultural effort tied to the Democratic National Convention. Cultural agency Gertie is leading “Next Stop: Chicago,” a city-wide project aimed at addressing local infrastructure inequality through public art installations.
Abby Pucker, founder of Gertie, elaborated, “Next Stop: Chicago is designed to highlight the crucial intersection of infrastructure and the arts through installations and programs that address resource allocation and infrastructure inequity—issues that have disproportionately affected Black and brown communities in this city. This challenge requires a multifaceted approach and collaboration across various sectors to ensure our city thrives.”
Upcoming Cultural Activations
Gertie’s project will feature several community arts festivals, a unique sound sculpture, new murals, and a 50-foot-long light installation by artists Jack C. Newell and Vinod Havalad, to be displayed under the “L” tracks along Wabash Avenue.
A Cultural Renaissance on the Tracks
As the Democratic National Convention approaches, Chicago is embracing a wave of cultural vibrancy with the “Track(ed) Changes” initiative and Gertie’s “Next Stop: Chicago” project. These efforts not only enhance the city’s public transit system but also address important social issues through artistic expression. With the city’s commitment to celebrating and improving its cultural landscape, Chicago is set to showcase its creative spirit and community resilience during this significant event.
