American Airlines is set to reduce its flight options from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), discontinuing several popular nonstop routes. The airline’s decision will impact travel to Las Vegas, Orlando, New Orleans, Reno, and Palm Springs.

Route Discontinuations

American Airlines has confirmed that starting in October, it will halt nonstop flights from Austin to Las Vegas (LAS), Orlando (MCO), New Orleans (MSY), Reno (RNO), and Palm Springs (PSP). The last day of operation for flights to Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Orlando will be Sunday, October 6. The Reno and Palm Springs routes, which were previously offered seasonally, will not return.

American Airlines’ Network Adjustments

“American is continuously evaluating its network,” an American Airlines spokesperson stated. “As part of this ongoing process, we will reduce service from Austin starting in October. We are proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The route reductions align with American Airlines’ strategic focus on enhancing its network to better meet business objectives and optimize revenue. “We are taking decisive actions to implement a strategy that maximizes our profitability and simplifies the customer experience,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom during a July 2024 earnings call.

Impact on Austin Airport

This announcement follows a similar move by Allegiant Airlines, which also recently revealed plans to reduce routes and close its crew base at Austin Airport. Allegiant’s adjustments are partly due to the closure of its terminal for construction.

Despite these route cuts, the flight reductions are not attributed to declining demand. In 2023, Austin Airport saw a record 22 million passengers, and it is currently undergoing expansions, including the growth of Terminal B and the construction of a new arrivals and departures hall.

Conclusion

American Airlines’ route changes from Austin reflect broader adjustments aimed at optimizing network performance. While passengers may face fewer direct flight options, Austin Airport’s continued growth and high passenger volumes indicate a robust travel market.
