United Airlines is introducing a new policy aimed at simplifying the check-in process for its basic economy travelers. Beginning August 6, passengers holding basic economy tickets will be able to check in online via the United app, United.com, or at an airport kiosk, according to a statement provided to Travel + Leisure.
New Online Check-In Option for Basic Economy
Previously, basic economy passengers were required to check in at the airport in person. This restriction was due to the nature of basic economy fares, which do not include a carry-on bag, necessitating an in-person verification by airport staff.
New Policy to Prevent Misuse
To address concerns about passengers bypassing the carry-on restrictions by checking in online, United will now require basic economy travelers to provide a credit card during the check-in process. If a traveler brings a carry-on bag to the gate, a $65 fee will be automatically charged to the provided card after departure.
Mandatory Bag Declaration
As part of the new procedure, passengers will need to declare the number of bags they are bringing at the time of check-in. This measure is intended to ensure compliance with the carry-on restrictions associated with basic economy fares.
Positive Test Results
The policy change follows a successful trial run at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). United reported positive feedback from the test, noting a reduction in the number of gate-checked bags. The airline’s spokesperson indicated that the pilot program helped refine the system and address potential issues.
Temporary Kiosk Issues
Until the new policy is fully implemented, some basic economy passengers may experience temporary issues with airport kiosks that require overrides. United has advised that such issues may persist for a few weeks during the transition period.
Comparison with Other Airlines
In contrast to United’s policy, JetBlue is making its own adjustments to basic economy fares. Starting in September, JetBlue will include a carry-on bag with its basic economy tickets, reflecting a trend among airlines to enhance the value of their lower-tier fare options.
Looking Forward
United Airlines’ updated check-in policy for basic economy passengers is designed to streamline the travel experience while maintaining enforcement of baggage restrictions. As the airline continues to refine its services, travelers are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and plan their check-in process accordingly.
