Starting July 10, non-Chinese permanent residents in Hong Kong and Macau can apply for the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents. Here’s what you need to know before applying for the permit.

The permit is valid for five years, allowing multiple entries into mainland China, with each stay not exceeding 90 days. Holders will no longer need to provide fingerprint verification, a customs declaration card, or a passport for each trip to the mainland.

Who can apply? Non-Chinese permanent residents of Hong Kong and Macau who wish to travel to mainland China for short-term purposes, including investment, sightseeing, visiting family, or business.

Required Documents

Application Form: Completed Application Form for Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents (Non-Chinese Citizens) with a recent photo.

Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card: A valid HKID. For those under 11 without a permanent HKID, the Notice of Application for Access to Information from the HK Immigration Department is required.

Ordinary Passport: A valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity (excluding passports not recognized by the Chinese government).

Nationality Certificates: Issued within 6 months prior to the application date, including the Notice of Application for Access to Information from the HK Immigration Department.

Application Processing and Collection

Processing Time: The permit will be issued within 20 working days after the application is accepted.

Collection: Permits can be collected at the application offices with the Application Receipt. For applicants under 18, legal guardians can collect the permit on their behalf.

Collection Period: Permits must be collected within 12 months from the scheduled collection date. Failure to do so without justifiable reasons will result in the cancellation of the permit.

First Application: HK$260 in Hong Kong or Macau.

Renewal/Replacement: Renminbi 230 yuan in mainland China.

Important Considerations

In-person Application: Applicants must apply in person at the processing authority (China Travel Service (HK) Ltd).

Minors: Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by their guardians.

Usage Restrictions: The permit does not allow the holder to work, study, or engage in news coverage activities in mainland China.

Separate visas or permits are required for these activities.

Renewal/Replacement: In mainland China, applicants can stay legally with the original Application Receipt or apply for a one-time exit travel document to leave the mainland and then renew the permit through China Travel Service (HK) Ltd.
