FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Independence Day holiday is anticipated to bring record-setting travel numbers across the country. According to AAA, over 71 million people will be on the move this week, marking a significant increase from last year.
“It is busier than last year’s numbers. TSA expects this year’s travel period for Independence Day to be 20% above last year’s numbers,” said Vikkie Calderon, a representative of Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
Fresno Yosemite International Airport is gearing up for this surge in travel. “Now through July 7, and especially on Friday, July 5, are expected to be the busiest days, with over 5,000 passengers departing the Fresno airport,” Calderon noted.
To accommodate the influx of travelers, the airport has added flights to major destinations including Atlanta, Dallas, and Chicago. Calderon advises travelers to arrive at the airport well in advance: “Arrive at least two hours before domestic flight departures and three hours before international flights.”
Increased Road Traffic Expected
Beyond airports, travelers will also encounter increased traffic on roads. “We’re going to see a lot more people heading to the mountains, lakes, and other destinations to enjoy the holiday,” said Mike Salas of the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The CHP is preparing to keep roads safe during this busy period. “We will have more patrol officers out there. Last year, we arrested over 1,200 DUI drivers,” Salas stated. The CHP’s maximum enforcement period will run from 6 p.m. on July 3 through midnight on July 7.
Safety Precautions
Salas emphasizes the importance of safety: “The CHP will be out in full force to ensure a safe holiday for everyone.” Additionally, those engaging in outdoor activities are encouraged to stay hydrated and protect themselves from the sun.
With increased travel by air and road, officials are urging travelers to plan ahead and take necessary precautions to ensure a smooth and safe holiday experience.
