(CNN) – This Fourth of July holiday will see millions of Americans hitting the roads and packing airports as they travel to celebrate the nation’s independence.

According to AAA, nearly 71 million people will journey 50 miles or more this week, with a record-breaking 60.6 million opting to drive to their destinations.

“Make sure you’re prepared for delays no matter where you might be,” advised AAA spokesperson Alec Slatky. The heaviest traffic is anticipated on the days leading up to and on July 4, particularly between 2 and 7 p.m. The peak travel days are expected to be July 3 and July 7.

With increased remote work flexibility, more people are starting their trips earlier in the week. “We’re seeing a lot of folks taking ‘work-cations’ where they may be extending it a few days,” Slatky noted.

Airports will also be bustling. Between Friday, June 28, and Monday, July 8, the TSA expects to screen over 28 million passengers. Sunday, July 7, is predicted to be the busiest day for air travel.

“As an agency nationwide, we are going to be extremely busy for the summer,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Maryland, Christopher Murgia. He advised travelers to arrive at the airport early or on time to mitigate potential delays.

Weather conditions are already affecting travel plans, with numerous flights canceled last Sunday due to storms in the northeast. Additionally, those heading south should be aware that Hurricane Beryl could disrupt travel plans.
