Vancouver, June 26, 2024 – The Metro Vancouver board of directors is poised to deliberate on a motion aimed at increasing transparency and oversight of international travel expenditures, responding to public concerns over rising costs.
The motion follows recent criticism after several officials, including four mayors and three employees such as CAO Jerry Dobrovolny, attended the International Conference on Urban Drainage in Amsterdam. While the exact taxpayer expense remains undisclosed, heightened scrutiny has prompted calls for stricter controls.
Bowen Island Mayor Andrew Leonard, who is championing the motion, expressed concerns over the lack of clarity regarding the value derived from such trips amid a significant increase in expenses compared to pre-pandemic levels.
The proposed measures include mandatory board approval for international trips, detailed projections of expected benefits and expenses, and post-travel reports outlining outcomes and actual costs incurred. Vancouver Councillor Lisa Dominato voiced support for the motion, emphasizing the importance of enhancing policy to safeguard taxpayer funds.
As Metro Vancouver continues to grapple with financial challenges, including those stemming from infrastructure projects like the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant, the motion aims to ensure prudent use of public resources in all international travel endeavors.
