Charlotte, NC – A new 600,000-square-foot plane-spotting area has opened just two miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), providing an exciting new venue for aviation enthusiasts and families. The lookout deck is free and accessible to the public, offering stunning views of the airfield, skyline, and terminal, according to airport officials.
The deck boasts several aircraft-themed amenities designed to engage visitors of all ages. “The Airport knows how important the Overlook is to the local community and we worked diligently to create a place that people of all ages will enjoy,” said CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine. “This space showcases many displays and features that will educate, inspire and create lasting memories.”
Among the attractions are an airport-themed playground, complete with a mini air traffic control tower slide and a plane-shaped climbing structure. The site also features a retired U.S. military fighter jet and exhibits on aviation history in the Carolinas, the science behind a Boeing 747, and runway construction and naming.
Visitors can also enjoy a food truck area and covered picnic tables for a comfortable plane-spotting experience. Additionally, the area includes a memorial to USAir Flight 1016, which crashed in 1994 while attempting to land at CLT, resulting in 37 fatalities.
This new lookout replaces a temporary one set up after the previous overlook closed in 2022 due to construction at the airport. The site is equipped with accessible parking, bicycle racks, restrooms with baby changing stations, and pet relief areas.
In other news, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is set to welcome its first Delta Sky Club lounge by the end of 2024, further enhancing amenities for travelers.
