New data from the Japan Tourism Agency reveals Australians are now the top long-haul visitors to Japan’s Nagano region when measured by overnight stays. Among all international markets, Australia ranked second only to Taiwan, with Hong Kong coming in third.
The numbers show remarkable growth – Australian visitors accounted for 100,630 bed nights in Nagano during the first five months of 2024, a stunning 90% increase compared to the same period last year.
Helen Wong from Nagano Tourism Organization said “This dramatic jump from 52,700 bed nights last year proves how much Australians value Nagano as their preferred winter escape.”
Famous for world-class ski resorts like Shiga Kogen, Nagano offers slopes for all skill levels. The prime skiing season runs from late December through early March, with January and February delivering the deepest snow.
Beyond skiing, Nagano charms visitors with unique winter events including the spectacular Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival and the lively Snow Monkey Beer Live event featuring craft beer tastings and live music at Shiga Kogen resort.
