Tourism Ireland Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day in Madrid with ‘Semana de Irlanda’

Tourism Ireland is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Madrid with its ‘Semana de Irlanda’ (Ireland Week), marking the third year of this exciting event. The week-long celebration is part of a broader initiative promoting St. Patrick’s Day in Spain and globally.

This year, ‘Semana de Irlanda’ features 30 different events, including music and dance performances by the UCD Dance Society at Madrid’s Gran Vía metro station. The station, located on the Green Line in the city center, is illuminated in green throughout the week to honor St. Patrick’s Day. Additionally, Tourism Ireland’s new St. Patrick’s Day video is being shown on a large screen at the station, which sees an estimated 250,000 commuters daily.

The festivities kicked off with a special performance by U2 tribute artists Pavel Sfera and Steve Richards at the Plaza de España metro station. They also surprised commuters with another performance at Gran Vía station before continuing the celebration at the James Joyce pub. The tribute artists’ performances have gained significant attention, with footage viewed over 1 million times on Tourism Ireland’s social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok (DescubreIrlanda).

Susan Bolger, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for Spain, commented: “We started our ‘Semana de Irlanda’ celebrations in Madrid with lively performances by two U2 tribute artists. Our goal is to bring joy to the people of Madrid, show the warm hospitality of Ireland, and highlight our vibrant music and culture.”

Bolger added, “St. Patrick’s Day is a unique opportunity to showcase the best of Ireland to the world. We are making the most of this moment, as it drives a significant increase in online searches for Irish holidays, which helps boost travel bookings for the spring and summer.”

In addition to Madrid, Tourism Ireland is also hosting ‘Ireland Week’ celebrations in Milan, Paris, and Switzerland, bringing a taste of Irish culture to key tourism markets across Europe.

Through ‘Semana de Irlanda,’ Tourism Ireland continues to strengthen its cultural ties with Spain, promoting Ireland as a lively and welcoming destination for travelers.
