Helsinki Transforms Vintage Tram into High-Tech De-Icing Vehicle for Light Rail

Helsinki has introduced a creative solution to maintain its Light Rail Line 15 during the winter months by converting a vintage tram into a specialized de-icing vehicle. The project, led by Kaupunkiliikenne, the city’s transport operator, aims to ensure uninterrupted service during Finland’s harsh winters.

The city’s transport department explains that keeping overhead electrification infrastructure free from ice is crucial to preventing disruptions in light rail service. The converted tram, nicknamed “Ananas” (Pineapple) due to its bright yellow color, represents a sustainable approach to urban mobility and innovative engineering.

From Passenger Tram to De-Icing Machine

The tram, originally put into service in the 1980s, was refurbished in 1999 with a low-floor section to improve accessibility. For its new role as a de-icing vehicle, Kaupunkiliikenne’s engineers removed the passenger seats and redesigned the tram for bidirectional operation, adding a second driver’s cab.

Instead of the traditional felt roll method for applying antifreeze, the tram now uses a high-tech spray system that ensures an even distribution of de-icing fluid on the overhead power lines. This modern approach boosts efficiency and reduces maintenance time. Ten CCTV cameras are installed on the tram to provide real-time monitoring for transport engineers.
