Virgin Australia has announced the appointment of Dave Emerson as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective Friday, 14 March. Emerson, who previously served as the airline’s Chief Commercial Officer, will take over from Jayne Hrdlicka, who confirmed her retirement in February 2024 after steering the company through a period of significant transformation.

Emerson brings over 25 years of experience in the aviation and tourism sectors. Known for his expertise in driving business transformation and delivering strong financial results, Emerson has a rich aviation background, including roles at America West Airlines and as a former senior partner at Bain & Company. Since joining Virgin Australia in June 2021, he has been instrumental in shaping the airline into a customer-focused carrier that emphasizes value and choice.

Emerson’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Virgin Australia. The airline has recently announced plans to resume long-haul international flights and finalized the sale of Bain Capital’s remaining 25% stake to Qatar Airways. Additionally, the company continues to innovate its domestic services.

“I am honored to lead Virgin Australia and its 8,000-strong team into the next chapter of our journey,” Emerson said. “Our customers are at the center of everything we do, but it’s our people who truly make this organization special.”

Outgoing CEO Jayne Hrdlicka, who led the airline through its post-COVID recovery, will remain involved during the transition period to ensure a smooth handover. Reflecting on her tenure, Hrdlicka said, “Leading Virgin Australia has been a career highlight and a tremendous privilege. Today, Virgin Australia is the most reliable, trusted, and loved airline in the country.”

Virgin Australia faced significant challenges in recent years, entering voluntary administration in April 2020 with $6.8 billion in debts. The administration process, managed by Deloitte, was described as one of the most complex in Australia’s corporate history. Bain Capital’s acquisition of the airline in late 2020 marked a turning point, paving the way for Hrdlicka’s leadership.

Emerson emphasized his commitment to building on the progress made under Hrdlicka’s leadership. “The strategy we set after emerging from administration is now delivering results,” he said. “As we return to long-haul international flights, we aim to offer our customers even greater choice and value.”

With Emerson at the helm, Virgin Australia is poised to enter a new era of growth and innovation, building on its reputation as a customer-centric and resilient airline.
