British travelers have been warned about upcoming changes to border security when visiting popular holiday spots like Spain, Portugal, and France. The European Union’s new Entry-Exit System (EES) will introduce additional checks, including fingerprint and facial scans, as well as digital entry logs.
The system, which was originally set to launch in 2024, has been delayed and is now expected to roll out sometime this year, though the exact date remains unconfirmed.
The new measures will affect travelers entering or leaving 30 countries within the Schengen Area. They will have to go through automated border checks, and will also need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). The ETIAS will cost €7 (about £6) and will be valid for three years.
While the system aims to make border crossings more efficient, experts warn that it could lead to longer waits initially. The team at Travel Republic advised travelers to prepare for delays as people adjust to the new procedures. They said, “While the EES is designed to streamline border crossings, travelers should expect some delays as the system is introduced. Temporary congestion at major entry points is likely as biometric scans and other verification steps are implemented.”
There have been concerns about privacy related to the biometric data collected during the checks. However, experts reassure travelers that strict regulations are in place to protect their personal information. “The biometric data will be securely stored and only accessible to authorized border authorities. These measures are designed to ensure privacy, and the system will be continuously monitored to maintain high-security standards,” they explained.
To avoid any issues when the new system is introduced, travelers are encouraged to keep their travel documents up-to-date and stay informed about the latest news on travel procedures.
