Escape Lisbon’s Crowds: Discover the Tranquil Charm of Alentejo

by Alice

In the face of overtourism, Europe’s cities are once again grappling with the challenge of managing visitor numbers, and Lisbon is no exception. As crowds overwhelm its historic streets, many locals are pushing back, urging travelers to reconsider the city’s high season. But does this mean that Portugal—undoubtedly one of Europe’s most captivating destinations—should be struck off your travel list? Absolutely not.

A solution that’s often overlooked, yet incredibly rewarding, is to explore the serene beauty of the surrounding countryside. Just an hour from Lisbon, the Alentejo region offers a tranquil escape with all the charm and culture that draws visitors to Portugal, but without the bustling crowds.

Stretching from the Tejo River to the northern mountains of the Algarve, Alentejo is known for its striking cork oak forests—home to nearly half of the world’s cork production—ancient towns, and a cultural heritage steeped in Moorish influence. While life here moves at a slower pace, it is far from stagnant. In fact, Alentejo’s growing appeal has led to a wave of new, high-end accommodations that blend the region’s rustic charm with modern luxury.

New Accommodations in Alentejo

One of the most exciting new additions to the region is Quinta do Paral – The Wine Hotel, which opened in June in the vineyards of Apartado. This 22-room boutique hotel, a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World, celebrates the winemaking traditions of the Vidigueira region. The design, led by architect Saraiva & Associados, incorporates local elements such as terracotta tiles, whitewashed walls, and geometric ceramic screens known as celosias. Rooms at the hotel start at approximately $420 per night.

For those seeking a more intimate rural experience, the O Val Farmhouse in Monforte offers a five-room retreat at the Herdade de Vale Guardez. Available for private buyouts at around $900 per night with a minimum six-night stay, this rural hideaway boasts original vaulted ceilings, slate floors, and thick white walls characteristic of the Alto Alentejo. French artist Sam Baron designed the property’s distinctive black stripe pattern, paying tribute to the family’s Azorean roots.

On the other end of the spectrum, the AP Lago Montargil Conference & Spa offers luxury near the Montargil Dam, with 99 rooms, six suites, and 11 nautically-themed villas, all featuring private pools. The property also includes a 3,000-square-foot spa, watersports facilities, and a large conference center—ideal for both relaxation and business gatherings.

Expanding Options for Travelers

Alentejo is also seeing growth in more accessible accommodations. Mercan Properties Group has opened two new hotels in Évora, including the Holiday Inn Express Évora and the Holiday Inn Beja, both catering to different needs. The Holiday Inn Express offers a pool, restaurant, and lounge bar, while the Holiday Inn Beja, part of an urban renewal initiative, preserves the historic facade of its building and showcases a piece by the renowned Portuguese street artist Vhils.

Looking to the future, Herdade da Palheta, a high-end resort near Évora, is set to open in 2028. This five-star retreat will offer 60 guestrooms, 35 villas, 20 countryside homes, and a wine club housed in a historic winery, providing a modern interpretation of the region’s rural lifestyle.

Why Alentejo?

Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a history lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat away from the crowds, Alentejo offers the perfect blend of tradition and innovation. Its charming towns, scenic vineyards, and newly developed luxury accommodations make it an increasingly attractive option for travelers looking to experience the essence of Portugal without the crowds of Lisbon.

As Lisbon contends with overtourism, Alentejo stands as a reminder that there’s more to Portugal than its capital city. For those who value authenticity, tranquility, and cultural richness, this lesser-known region is the perfect destination to explore.
