A new study from Traveloka, conducted in partnership with YouGov, has shed light on the shifting dynamics within the Asia-Pacific travel sector. Drawing insights from nearly 12,000 respondents spanning nine countries, the research highlights emerging travel motivations, preferences, and broader trends influencing the region’s diverse travel market.
The report, titled Travel Redefined: Understanding and Catering to the Diverse Needs of APAC Travellers, reveals key shifts that businesses can leverage to drive success in 2025 and beyond.
Diverse Motivations Fueling Asia-Pacific Travel
The study underscores that Asia-Pacific travellers are increasingly driven by a wide array of experiences, from relaxation and adventure to cultural immersion and culinary exploration. Five primary motivations stand out across the region: travellers are seeking to rest and recharge, visit top tourist attractions, connect with nature, experience different cultures, and savor local cuisines.
When it comes to destination choices, the preferences vary significantly based on country and individual interests. For instance, 75% of Indonesians are drawn to outdoor adventures, with mountains and nature reserves ranking among their top destinations. In contrast, 62% of Japanese travellers prioritize cultural and historical experiences, such as visiting museums and castles. Meanwhile, 59% of Vietnamese respondents favor coastal retreats, with beaches and resorts topping their list of preferred vacation spots.
The Influence of Technology, Sustainability, and Payment Preferences
Beyond the motivations and destination choices, the study highlights how technology, sustainability concerns, and payment preferences play a pivotal role in shaping the travel habits of Asia-Pacific’s dynamic consumer base. These factors are rapidly influencing how travellers plan and navigate their journeys.
Caesar Indra, President of Traveloka, emphasized the need for businesses to embrace the region’s diversity with tailored strategies: “Asia-Pacific offers abundant opportunities, but its diversity demands creativity and nuance. Understanding the unique needs of this market is crucial for travel providers looking to succeed in this evolving landscape. The key to success lies in integrating these insights into innovative strategies that connect travellers with the experiences they desire.”
As Asia-Pacific’s travel preferences continue to evolve, businesses that adapt to these insights are poised to thrive in an increasingly competitive market.
