Montreal and surrounding areas are under a winter weather travel advisory, with Environment Canada predicting 10 to 15 centimeters of snow to hit the St. Lawrence Valley, including metro Montreal, Monday night. Snowfall is expected to significantly impair travel, creating snow-covered roads and reducing visibility. Conditions are expected to improve by Tuesday morning, with clearer skies anticipated on Christmas Day.
The advisory, which began at 2:30 PM on December 23, warns of challenging travel conditions due to moderate snow and low visibility, particularly during the evening and overnight hours. In addition to the Montreal area, the Ottawa Valley and eastern Ontario have been upgraded to snowfall warnings, with up to 20 centimeters of snow expected in some areas.
An Alberta Clipper low-pressure system is responsible for the snow, which will spread southeast from the Great Lakes to Montreal, arriving after 8 PM. The snowfall will persist into Tuesday morning, affecting the commute. Temperatures are expected to remain low, ranging from -5C to -7C, keeping the precipitation in snow form throughout the event. Morning lows on Christmas Day are forecast to reach the minus teens.
The snowstorm is arriving just as the holiday travel period begins, which has prompted the advisory. Travelers are urged to be cautious, as roads will become slippery and snow-covered. While conditions will remain poor throughout Monday night, they are expected to improve from west to east on Christmas Eve.
Temperatures have been particularly cold over the weekend, with Montreal seeing its coldest air of the season. The city recorded a low of -17C on Sunday morning, with wind chill values dipping into the minus 20s. The cold snap is expected to continue into Monday, potentially setting a record low for the season.
Clear skies and cold temperatures are forecast for Christmas Day, with highs near -10C. Temperatures will gradually rise through the week, reaching the freezing point by the weekend.
