As 2024 draws to a close, a new study from the international travel communications app Nomad has mapped out the most popular overseas destinations for U.S. travelers. Based on data from over 50,000 U.S.-based customers, the analysis of state-by-state preferences reveals some unexpected trends.
The United Kingdom tops the list, emerging as the most popular international destination for travelers from 25 states, including major regions like New York, Florida, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. The UK’s dominance is notable, as it outpaced all other European destinations. In fact, Italy was the top choice in only one state—South Dakota.
Canada ranks second, drawing travelers from 13 states, particularly those along the northern border, including Washington, Montana, and Maine. The proximity and ease of travel to Canada continue to make it a favored choice for many Americans.
Japan takes third place, with eight states—such as California, Oregon, and Alaska—choosing it as their primary international destination. Japan’s appeal has steadily grown, particularly on the West Coast and in other states with strong cultural and historical ties to the region.
Indonesia, particularly its popular tourist destinations like Bali and Lombok, emerges as a rising star, securing the top spot in Alabama, Kansas, and Mississippi. As travel to Southeast Asia grows, Indonesia could see an even greater rise in popularity next year.
These findings, derived from SIM access data and overseas purchase locations from January to November, reveal a diverse range of international destinations that reflect both traditional preferences and emerging trends among U.S. travelers.
