Thailand, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, anticipates a surge in tourism revenue during the 2025 New Year celebrations, with projected earnings exceeding 62 billion baht (approximately $1.8 billion).
According to Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the country expects to welcome 1.56 million foreign tourists during the New Year period, contributing around 45 billion baht in revenue—marking a 16% increase in arrivals and a 20% rise in revenue compared to last year.
Domestic tourism is also set to play a significant role, with 4.41 million Thai visitors forecast to travel, up 29% from the previous year. Their spending is expected to generate 17 billion baht, a year-on-year increase of 30%.
Factors Driving Growth
Several initiatives are fueling this optimistic outlook. The “Ease of Travel” policy, which includes visa exemptions for nationals from 93 countries and simplified entry procedures, has been instrumental in attracting foreign visitors.
Accessibility is further enhanced by the launch of 30 new flight routes from key markets, including China, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Scandinavia, and France.
Thailand’s appeal as a New Year destination continues to grow. The country has been named one of the world’s top 20 destinations for New Year’s Eve celebrations by Condé Nast Traveler.
Additionally, a five-day public holiday from December 28 to January 1, 2025, declared by the Thai government, is expected to boost domestic and international travel.
Tackling High Airfares
In response to concerns about rising airfare costs, the Thai government is collaborating with six airlines to offer a 30% discount on key tourist routes. Popular destinations such as Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phuket, Samui, and Udon Thani are among the discounted routes, making travel more affordable for both domestic and international tourists.
With its strategic measures and global recognition, Thailand is poised to capitalize on the holiday season, reinforcing its position as a premier New Year destination in Southeast Asia.
