Bangkok Airways is gearing up for a major expansion in its Southeast Asian operations, responding to a surge in air travel demand across the region. The Thai carrier has leased two Airbus A320s as part of its strategy to capitalize on Thailand’s booming tourism industry, which is expected to welcome a record 40 million visitors in 2025.
Optimizing Routes for High-Demand Travel
The airline is set to optimize its routes in preparation for the year-end travel season and the coming year. As international air travel in the Asia-Pacific region continues to lead global growth, Bangkok Airways is increasing flight frequencies and deploying more aircraft on key short-haul routes. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the region has seen a 19.7% average increase in international air travel.
Bangkok Airways is anticipating a 12% rise in ticket bookings for the final months of 2024 through the first quarter of 2025 compared to last year. This surge is in line with Thailand’s seasonal tourism trends, which typically peak from November to March.
Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, President of Bangkok Airways, acknowledged the growth in ticket reservations and highlighted the airline’s plans to resume several pre-pandemic routes. A standout is the increase in bookings for flights to Samui, which have grown by 25%.
Expanding Regional Operations
As part of its strategic growth, the airline is planning to resume daily flights between Samui (USM) and Kuala Lumpur (KUL) by late 2025. Additionally, Bangkok Airways has reintroduced services connecting Chiang Mai (CNX) with Krabi (KBV), which will operate three times a week.
Meeting Rising Demand with Wet Leases
In addition to its core fleet of 23 aircraft, which includes Airbus A319s, ATR 72-600 turboprops, and A320 jets, Bangkok Airways has secured two Airbus aircraft through wet leases to handle increased regional travel demand. These leased aircraft, one A320 and one A319, are already in service and will remain operational until April 2025.
Thailand’s regional aviation market is competitive, with carriers such as Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Airways also serving regional routes. However, Bangkok Airways differentiates itself by focusing on premium services and business travelers. Known as “Asia’s boutique airline,” it operates exclusive airport lounges at its primary hubs, including Suvarnabhumi, Phuket, and Chiang Mai airports.
Strengthening Regional Leadership
Looking ahead, Bangkok Airways aims to further solidify its position as a leader in the regional aviation market. One key initiative for 2025 includes hosting the 69th Annual Assembly of Presidents of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), a prestigious event for the region’s aviation industry.
Expanded Partnership with British Airways
In a related development, British Airways has resumed flights to Bangkok after a four-year break, now operating from London Gatwick (LGW) instead of Heathrow. This route, initially flying three times a week, will increase to five weekly flights between January and February 2025. The expanded partnership includes an enhanced codeshare agreement with Bangkok Airways, offering passengers more travel options between the two airlines.
Through these efforts, Bangkok Airways is positioning itself to remain a prominent player in Southeast Asia’s aviation sector, catering to a growing demand for both business and leisure travel.
