With the 2024 holiday season fast approaching, nearly 120 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more, marking a significant surge compared to last year. According to AAA, this year’s travel volume will surpass pre-pandemic records set in 2019, as the country embraces the busiest travel period in recent history. The holiday season, which AAA defines as spanning from December 21 to January 1, coincides with the rare occurrence of Christmas and Hanukkah falling on the same day for the first time since 2005.
Of the 119.3 million travelers, the vast majority—approximately 90%—are projected to hit the road, while 7.8 million are anticipated to fly, despite higher ticket prices. AAA’s forecast represents an additional 3 million travelers compared to last year, signaling an ongoing recovery in travel demand.
Road Trips and Air Travel Challenges
While many Americans will opt for road trips, the holiday season also brings its share of travel stress. Factors such as weather disruptions and crowded highways can complicate even the most carefully planned trips. For drivers, AAA recommends taking regular breaks and driving in two-hour increments to stay alert. The association also advises caution on winter roads, particularly in snowy or icy conditions, emphasizing the importance of winter tires and increased following distance for safety.
Traffic congestion tends to peak after 11 a.m. during the holidays, with AAA forecasting that the busiest travel day will be December 27, especially between Lafayette, Louisiana, and Houston, Texas, where drive times may reach nearly five hours. On the other hand, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are expected to see lighter traffic.
Top Destinations and Air Travel Delays
AAA’s data reveals that Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is the top international destination for U.S. travelers this holiday season, while Orlando, Florida, remains the most popular domestic spot. Other Florida cities are also favored, with Honolulu making the list as the seventh most-visited destination. Winter weather is expected to drive many from the northern U.S. toward warmer climates.
Air travel is also anticipated to be busy, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reporting that weather remains the leading cause of air traffic delays during the winter season. While the full weather forecast for the holiday period is still taking shape, the FOX Forecast Center predicts above-average temperatures for much of the U.S. west of the Mississippi River, potentially reducing the likelihood of widespread snowstorms.
As travelers prepare for what is shaping up to be a record-breaking holiday season, AAA urges everyone to plan ahead and stay informed about weather conditions to ensure a smooth journey.
