In a recent analysis of travel trends, London has been identified as the most-searched city for prospective travelers in 2024, according to eDreams ODIGEO’s ‘Year in Travel’ report. This comprehensive study, which aggregates booking patterns and travel preferences, underscores the English capital’s enduring appeal among international tourists.
eDreams ODIGEO, a leading travel platform composed of four online travel agencies—eDreams, GO Voyages, Opodo, and Travellink—conducted its research using flight search and booking data gathered from January 1 to October 31, 2024. The findings reveal that London not only captured the imagination of travelers this year but is also on track to be the second most-booked destination for 2025.
The report ranks Paris, famously dubbed the “City of Love” and the host of the 2024 Olympics, as the top global destination. Following closely behind are popular Spanish locales: Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. Other major cities such as Madrid, Rome, and Lisbon also feature prominently in the top ten list, showcasing a diverse array of urban escapes that attract tourists from around the world.
In an interesting twist, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, topped the trending destinations list, experiencing a surge in interest with a nearly 50% increase in demand compared to 2023. This remarkable growth can be attributed to travelers seeking cultural immersion and adventure in destinations that offer both vibrant city life and natural beauty. Following Kuala Lumpur, Hurghada in Egypt saw a 38% rise in searches, while Santiago de Chile reported a 36% increase, highlighting a broader trend towards exploring diverse global experiences.
Notably, the report revealed that new contenders have emerged in the travel landscape. Bilbao, Spain; Stuttgart, Germany; and Jersey in the UK are among the fresh additions to the top 50 most sought-after destinations, indicating that UK tourists are keen to explore uncharted territories.
Dana Dunne, CEO of eDreams ODIGEO, emphasized the evolving preferences of travelers, noting that 73% of respondents expressed interest in utilizing artificial intelligence to assist in holiday planning. Social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest have also played a pivotal role in shaping travel choices, inspiring individuals to venture to new locales.
Closer to home, international arrivals in the UK showcased a diverse demographic. Approximately 20% of tourists hailed from Germany, while Spain contributed 17% and France accounted for 15% of the international visitor tally for 2024.
In terms of travel behavior, last-minute bookings have gained traction among UK travelers. The data indicates that 34% of all trips taken lasted between three and four days, with 37% of Britons booking their trips just two weeks prior to departure. This trend underscores a growing preference for spontaneous travel experiences.
The eDreams ODIGEO report also highlights the influence of major events on global travel trends. The forthcoming Olympic Games have led to a 62% increase in bookings to Paris, while the UEFA European Championship contributed to a 60% uptick in reservations to Germany. These significant events not only draw attention to host cities but also catalyze a surge in travel-related activities.
Looking ahead, eDreams ODIGEO forecasts a continued interest in long-haul city breaks, with destinations such as Bangkok, Tokyo, and New York anticipated to be in high demand among British travelers in 2025. Current trends for next year indicate that short-haul destinations—particularly Amsterdam’s picturesque canals and beach resorts in Barcelona and Malaga—are capturing the interest of UK tourists.
Dunne noted, “Examining the global travel landscape for 2024, traditional favorites such as Paris, Barcelona, and Palma continue to dominate the rankings. However, we are also witnessing a rising fascination with destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Hurghada, and Santiago de Chile, which are becoming increasingly popular among travelers seeking unique experiences.”
He further commented on the intersection of travel and music tourism, stating, “It has been intriguing to observe the impact of major musical events on global travel. Artists like Taylor Swift have inspired fans to travel to concert venues, significantly boosting local economies. This trend is poised to persist, particularly with the highly anticipated Oasis reunion, which has already sparked a staggering 700% increase in global searches for Manchester.”
As travelers look to explore new cultures and experiences, the insights provided by eDreams ODIGEO offer a window into the shifting dynamics of global travel. The findings not only reflect changing preferences among tourists but also the growing importance of cultural events and social media in shaping travel itineraries.
