Budget Woes Decline: Europeans Embrace Travel with Open Wallets

by Alice

New research from the European Travel Commission (ETC) indicates a significant uptick in travel sentiment among Europeans for the upcoming autumn and winter seasons. According to the latest report, 73% of Europeans plan to travel between October 2024 and March 2025, marking a 6% increase compared to the same timeframe last year.

The ETC’s “Monitoring Sentiment for Intra-European Travel” Wave 20 highlights strong travel intentions among respondents from Europe’s largest source markets. The United Kingdom leads the way, with 84% of respondents expressing a desire to travel, a notable 10% increase from 2023. Following closely behind are Germany at 79% (up 16%) and France at 78% (up 15%).

Miguel Sanz, President of the ETC, commented on the findings: “Today’s results reflect a robust enthusiasm for travel among Europeans, underscoring their commitment to travel budgets even after the summer peak. This enthusiasm is coupled with a growing interest in exploring lesser-known destinations, offering unique opportunities for off-the-beaten-path locations. Younger generations are particularly eager to discover hidden gems. By embracing diverse travel choices, we can promote responsible tourism, support local economies, and preserve cultural heritage.”

Travel Demand Driven by Younger Generations

The report reveals a growing travel enthusiasm across all age groups in Europe, with the most significant increases noted among younger travelers. Intentions to travel among the 25-34 age group have surged to 75%, reflecting a 9% year-on-year increase. Additionally, 64% of 18-24-year-olds plan to travel, an 8% rise, while 78% of those aged 35-44 show a 7% increase in travel intentions. Younger travelers are increasingly favoring city breaks and relaxing beach vacations.

Older travelers are also keen to explore, with 75% of those aged 55 and over expressing a desire to travel, up by 4%. Nearly half (45%) of this demographic plans trips lasting more than seven nights, seeking experiences rich in culture, heritage, or nature. They tend to prefer familiar destinations with reliable tourist infrastructures.

Focus on Lesser-Known Destinations

While Europe’s most popular travel spots continue to dominate, the report reveals that 51% of respondents are shifting their focus toward lesser-known destinations to avoid overcrowding in popular areas. Specifically, 38% are seeking less touristy locations, while 18% are interested in exploring remote, “new” areas with minimal infrastructure.

Younger generations are at the forefront of this trend, showing a clear preference for off-the-beaten-path experiences. Among Europeans, Polish (50%), Spanish (45%), and Dutch (44%) travelers are particularly inclined to choose quieter, less-travelled locations, leading the shift toward discovering hidden gems.

Decreased Concern Over Travel Costs

As the year progresses, European travelers are exhibiting decreased concern regarding travel expenses. Currently, only 19% express worries about trip costs, down 3% from the previous year. The most common budget range, selected by 27% of travelers, is €500-€1,000 per person per trip, closely followed by 26% planning to spend between €1,500 and €2,500, representing a 3% increase from last year.

Despite the overall decline in concerns about travel costs and inflation, 15% of respondents still worry about their financial situations. Additional significant concerns include the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, which troubles 13% of those surveyed, and tensions in the Middle East, concerning 9%. Worries about extreme weather events have decreased by 4% from last year, but 10% still express concern. Furthermore, 9% are apprehensive about potential travel disruptions due to strikes or staff shortages, and another 9% are anxious about overcrowding at their chosen destinations.

When selecting holiday destinations, safety emerges as the top criterion for 18% of Europeans, followed by stable weather and bargains, both at 12%. Additionally, 10% prioritize friendly, welcoming locals in their travel decisions.
