Raychel, known as notluxe on social media, shared this travel tip via a video, explaining how travelers can enjoy a free stopover in the Nordic country. “This program is often offered by airlines to encourage tourism in their hub cities,” she noted, highlighting that it generates thousands of additional tourists annually. “Think of it as an extended layover at no extra airfare cost,” she added.
Free Stopovers with Icelandair
With Icelandair, passengers can incorporate a free stopover in Reykjavik, the capital, for up to seven nights at no additional charge. Raychel elaborated on the requirements, stating that travelers must be flying over the Atlantic to qualify for the free stopover.
“If you’re planning a trip from the US to Europe, you can easily add Iceland without paying more,” she explained. “Simply book your flight from your origin to your destination and select ‘add stopover.’ You can stay in Iceland for one to seven nights,” she said.
In her example, Raychel booked a round trip from Chicago to Spain for under $400, effectively turning one trip into two without any additional flight costs.

Raychel emphasized that this hack is not exclusive to Iceland. Several other airlines offer similar stopover deals. “TAP Air Portugal allows free stopovers in Portugal, Emirates offers free stopovers in Dubai, and Copa provides this option in Panama City,” she mentioned. She also noted that travelers can take advantage of stopovers in Finland, Turkey, and Qatar.
“These stopover setups are a fantastic budget-friendly way to extend your trip and explore an additional destination at no extra cost,” Raychel pointed out.
