Xizang Launches Winter Tourism Campaign to Boost Off-Peak Visitor Numbers

The Xizang Autonomous Region in Southwest China kicked off its 2024 winter tourism promotional campaign on Friday, introducing a series of enticing offers designed to attract visitors during the traditionally slower travel season.

Dubbed the “Winter Tour in Xizang,” the initiative includes a range of incentives such as discounted tickets, hotel vouchers, and complimentary entry to popular tourist attractions. Notably, the campaign features a “buy one, get one free” offer on 10,000 domestic flight tickets through a lucky draw. Additionally, visitors can avail themselves of 10,000 free domestic train tickets, free admission to various tourist sites, and vouchers for complimentary stays at high-quality hotels.

Tailored consumption vouchers for family tours and senior travelers have also been launched as part of the campaign. Moreover, A-rated tourist attractions are providing free entry, while three-star and higher hotels, boutique inns, and restaurants are offering reduced rates during the off-peak season. Tourist transport companies have capped passenger transport prices at 50 percent of peak season rates.

Now in its seventh year, the “Winter Tour in Xizang” campaign aims to promote steady tourism growth throughout the year. The current round of promotions will run until March 15, 2025, as announced during a launch event held in Lhasa, the region’s capital.

During the event, the regional culture and tourism department established cooperation agreements with several provinces and cities across China. Additionally, local travel operators formed partnerships with international tour companies from countries including Australia, Thailand, and Germany.

Renowned for housing the world’s highest peak, Xizang offers a wealth of tourism resources, including stunning mountains, expansive grasslands, and rich ethnic heritage.

In 2023, the region welcomed 55.17 million tourists, reflecting an impressive 83.7-percent increase compared to the previous year. This surge resulted in a total tourism revenue of 65.15 billion yuan (approximately 9.17 billion U.S. dollars), marking a 60 percent rise from 2022.
