In its 2024 Winter Travel Report, Airbnb has identified North Bay as a rising destination for Canadians as winter approaches, marked by falling temperatures and snow. The report analyzes both international and domestic travel searches, highlighting a shift in winter travel preferences.
Matt McNama, senior communications manager at Airbnb, noted the shift in booking trends. “We looked at where people were booking for winter last year compared to this year,” he explained. “North Bay is trending positively, and it’s not surprising.”
Canadians are increasingly choosing local destinations to make the most of the winter season, McNama added. “A key finding is that people are spending more time outdoors,” he said. “Five of the ten trending destinations are ski resorts, and North Bay qualifies due to its Laurentian Ski Hill.”
Other notable destinations on the list include Blue Mountain, Ontario; Trois-Rivières, Quebec; Kamloops, British Columbia; Edmonton; Orford, Quebec; Toronto; Mont-Tremblant, Quebec; Vancouver; and Moncton, New Brunswick.
McNama speculated that the uptick in interest for winter getaways may stem from last year’s unremarkable winter weather. “Last year was quite mild, and Canadians might be seeking a more exciting winter experience this time around,” he remarked.
Mayor Peter Chirico described North Bay as a hidden gem and expressed his approval of its trending status. “Our city features Lake Nipissing, a beautiful waterfront, and access to outdoor activities including a ski hill,” he said. “While locals are aware of what North Bay offers, it’s great to see outside interest growing.”
Tanya Bedard, executive director of Tourism North Bay, emphasized the variety of winter activities available to visitors. “Whether you’re interested in snowmobiling, snowboarding, fishing, or cross-country skiing, North Bay has it all,” she stated. She also highlighted more leisurely options, including the signature French Winter Festival and the biennial Ice Follies public art exhibit on frozen Lake Nipissing.
In addition, Bedard announced the launch of a new winter market set to begin in November, aimed at enhancing the vibrancy of Downtown North Bay and supporting local artisans, restaurants, and businesses during the holiday season.
