Himachal Pradesh is poised to make significant strides in sustainable transportation as Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu unveiled an ambitious initiative to convert the state-run Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) to a fully electric fleet by March 2025.
Announcement During Golden Jubilee Celebrations
This announcement was made during the HRTC’s golden jubilee celebrations, attended by prominent figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri. In his address, Sukhu emphasized HRTC’s vital role in the state’s development, highlighting its reputation as a reliable and comfortable transportation option for travelers navigating the state’s mountainous terrain.
Acknowledgment of Employee Dedication
Sukhu acknowledged the dedication and hard work of HRTC employees, crediting their commitment for the corporation’s success over the past 50 years. The ceremony featured several important announcements, including a commitment to ensure timely payment of salaries and pensions to HRTC staff and retirees by October 28. Furthermore, the government plans to allocate INR 50 crore to address 55 months of overdue overtime payments, with a target to resolve these payments by March 31, 2025. Additionally, pending medical bills totaling INR 9 crore are set to be cleared within two months, underscoring the government’s focus on employee welfare.
Transitioning to Electric Vehicles
The Chief Minister stressed the necessity of transitioning from fossil fuel-powered buses to electric vehicles, not only to enhance HRTC’s financial stability but also to mitigate environmental impact. He urged HRTC to develop a strategic plan for the next 50 years while sharing personal anecdotes related to the corporation’s accomplishments.
Progress Under Current Administration
Significant progress has already been achieved under the current administration, with approximately 7,300 HRTC employees benefiting from the old pension scheme (OPS), regularization of 1,546 contract workers, and the creation of 608 new jobs, with an additional 550 positions slated for recruitment. The government has also promoted 421 employees, reinforcing its commitment to staff development.

During the event, a coffee table book commemorating HRTC’s history was launched, and outstanding staff members were recognized for their contributions. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri commended the professionalism and dedication of HRTC employees, who continue to excel despite challenging conditions, thereby enhancing the corporation’s reputation as a dependable and comfortable employer.
