Holland America Line is providing a unique opportunity to experience the 2026 solar eclipse with a trio of specially designed cruises that will traverse the path of totality. These cruises, set to launch in July and August 2026, will offer travelers the chance to view this celestial event from prime locations in the Mediterranean and the western coast of Iceland.
Mediterranean Eclipse Cruise
The shortest of the three options is a 13-day Mediterranean cruise aboard the Oosterdam, departing on August 9, 2026. This voyage will position itself to view the eclipse off the coast of Spain, between Alicante and Barcelona.
Scandinavian Eclipse Voyage
For a more extended experience, travelers can opt for the 28-day Scandinavian voyage on the Nieuw Statendam, starting on July 25, 2026. This cruise will sail into the path of totality from the northwest coast of Iceland, with additional stops in Greenland and Scotland.
“Voyage of the Vikings”
The longest option is the 35-day “Voyage of the Vikings” on the Zuiderdam. Scheduled to set sail from Boston on July 18, 2026, this comprehensive journey will feature a viewing of the eclipse from the western coast of Iceland. The itinerary also includes stops in Halifax, Canada; Greenland; Reykjavik, Iceland; Rotterdam, Netherlands; and several other destinations.
Eclipse Path and Timing
The total solar eclipse is expected to traverse the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal, and northern Spain on August 12, 2026, according to the National Solar Observatory (NSO). While partial solar eclipses are relatively frequent, occurring every few months, total solar eclipses are a rarer phenomenon, typically occurring about every 18 months.
Additional 2026 Cruise Options
In addition to the eclipse-themed cruises, Holland America is offering other special itineraries in 2026. This includes cruises designed to view the Northern Lights and spend five days above the Arctic Circle aboard the Rotterdam and the Nieuw Statendam.
Continued Interest in Eclipse Cruises
The new eclipse cruises follow the success of Holland America Line’s earlier solar eclipse voyages. “After the excitement and success around our 2024 eclipse cruises, we knew our guests were looking for additional opportunities to get a front-row seat for some of the world’s most special natural spectacles,” said Beth Bodensteiner, the chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, in a statement. “Our team has put together a lineup of cruises that not only deliver on that front, but also give guests in-depth exploration of exciting destinations and the premium onboard experience for which we’re known.”
